Meet the Hayes Team: John Mellios

By Jordan Grulkejohn staff profile

Before joining the Hayes team as Director of Client Services, John Mellios worked in education for 16 years. He started his career after graduating college at Oakland Unified School District (CA). Here he worked as an AmeriCorps member in three schools in Oakland USD (CA), providing oversight and technical support, and installing fiber optic networks and technology in each school. He then transitioned onto the administrative side and managed technology within the same district. Finally, John moved to Chicago to be closer to family, serving the role of Director of Educational Technology and Tools at Chicago Public Schools for five years.

John’s extensive background in K-12 education provides him insight into how Hayes can support schools and reduce costs. His experience managing technology for a large, urban school district means that he understands the challenges our customers face every day and works to make their jobs easier through the development of policies and procedures manuals.

John puts extreme importance on the value of education, saying “education is everything to our country, and in order to continue to grow as a nation and sustain the overall world, we have to have a strong, literate workforce.” His commitment to education is evident in the satisfaction he finds working with individual districts and schools. When asked his favorite part about working at Hayes, he said, “I love working one-on-one with districts, either in person or over the phone, to help create better ways and processes to support some of the challenges they are facing within their district.”

Hayes mission and values align with John’s beliefs that stem from his time as a K-12 educator. John believes the goal of supporting customers is seen throughout the company, as Hayes employees really do want the best for the schools.  While John enjoys working with districts, he also loves the work environment at Hayes, saying “we have an amazing group of people that work hard, but also like to have fun and laugh.”
